MacBook reboot options

Rebooting a computer is a trivial operation that is required to apply global changes to the system or some types of software. Newcomers to the macOS system sometimes do not know how to do this in the "apple" system, and today we want to tell them solutions to this problem.

Method 1: Reboot from under the system

Users who switched to macOS with Windows often rebooted the system through the Start menu. In the "apple" OS, the role of this tool is played by the Apple item in the menu bar.

Go to the main MacBook desktop and click on the button with the apple logo.

  • If you are prompted to close open programs, close them, but before doing this, make sure that all changes are made to the running files and they are saved.
  • Wait for the system to reboot.
  • You can also reboot the system from the account selection window.

Open the Apple menu and select "End the session ... ".

As you can see, the software reboot process is generally identical to other "OSes".

    Method 2: Hardware Restart

Restarting a system using a hardware method is more rigid than software. In some cases, this can lead to problems with subsequent downloads, so we recommend using it only as a last resort.

Turn to the MacBook keyboard - press and hold the keys Control + Command + Power Button. On versions with a Touch ID sensor, you need to touch and hold it.

If everything is done correctly, the MacBook will restart.

    MacBook does not restart

Sometimes even this trivial operation fails - the device may turn off instead of rebooting or turn on incorrectly. Consider the possible causes of this behavior and troubleshooting methods.

Most often, a similar problem is encountered by users who practice a hardware reboot method. The reason is simple: either the wrong key combination was pressed, or there are problems with the keyboard or with the power button in particular. The solution is to test the keyboard behavior.

Also, a normal reboot is often interrupted by hanging applications. Close them by the regular method will not work, you will need to use the forced completion method. For details of the procedure, refer to the manual at the link below.

A rarer and less obvious point is the problems with the programs that are present in the startup of the operating system. This is usually the main reason for the problem of starting the system after a reboot. You can fix the problem as follows:

    1. Download macOS in safe mode - this will allow you to log in. To do this, hold and hold the key Shift in the process of loading the OS.
    2. Next, open the utility "System Settings" - You can do this through the Apple menu or the Dock.

In the system settings, open the snap-in "Users and groups".

Open tab Entry Objects. In the area marked in the screenshot, there are elements of system startup. From it you need to remove everything that is not related to Apple products: to do this, select the desired position and click on the button with the minus icon in the bottom of the area.

  • Apply the changes and try rebooting again - this time the process should go without problems.
  • Also, problems with the drive cannot be ruled out. The best option would be to verify the data medium with Disk Utility.

    When is a reboot required?

Macbook or iMac users will only need to restart in a few cases:

    • operating system updates installed
    • any program does not start or hangs,
    • the computer is completely frozen.

In the first two cases, all reset options are suitable, and in the latter only an emergency. We will understand each method in more detail.

How to restart Macbook Air or iMac?

    1. At the top of the desktop is the launchpad.
    2. It is necessary to click on the apple icon on it (an analogue of the Start menu from Windows).
    3. In the menu that opens, select "Reboot" and wait for the operation to complete.
    4. If a specific application or file does not work for you, then do not rush to turn off the computer completely. In the same menu there is the possibility of emergency termination of applications (the option "Force Finder Finish").
    5. In the window that appears, select the program and click the "Finish" button.

You can also perform a reboot from the profile entry window.

How to restart MacBook from keyboard?

If the button-pressing option on the operating system menu does not suit you, then use the keyboard shortcut method on your Macbook.

    1. To do this, hold down the Control + Command + Power buttons at the same time and hold it for a few seconds.
    2. After the screen goes blank, you can release them and wait for the computer to boot.

Rebooting the iMac from the keyboard in this way is only possible with an original Apple input device.

Forced program termination on Mac OS X

Imagine that during operation, one of the applications has frozen, but the mouse cursor can still be moved around the screen. The first thing that should come to your mind is the keyboard shortcut Command + Q. If you did not know, then this combination completely closes the current application (it doesn’t just hide from the screen, but closes it).

Wait a minute before closing a frozen application. Perhaps this application is just trying to process your last request. In this case, the cursor takes the form of a spinning rainbow ball.

If it was not possible to close the application using the usual methods, then it’s time to use the “Force Force ...” command from the top menu.

From the window that appears, select the problem application and confirm with the Finish button. To turn off the MacBook, go to the next paragraph.

How to restart MacBook if it freezes?

In the event that the computer does not completely respond to your actions, not just one program hangs, but the entire operating system and the key combination does not help, use the last option.

    • To do this, hold down the power button for a few seconds, after which the laptop turns off.
    • Then press the power button again to turn on the device.

They suggest using this method only as a last resort, when nothing helps. It is highly recommended not to disconnect the all-in-one from the power supply or leave the laptop until the battery is completely discharged.

Sleep Mode / Reboot / Shutdown

I think that everything is clear and without explanation. From the top menu, select one of the items: Sleeping mode, Reboot or Off. Each of these commands will perform a corresponding action. Again, you can choose one of these items only if your computer does not freeze.

Above, we looked at OS X's “easy hang” and the usual way to shut down your MacBook. But what if the system does not respond to our actions and generally freezes. How to turn off the macbook in this case? About it below ...

    Forced shutdown

Another common situation is when the macbook stops responding to any of your actions: the mouse cursor does not move, the key combinations do not work, the macbook behaves inappropriately. In this case, we will have to perform a forced shutdown, or as I call it “hard restart”. To do this, press and hold the MacBook power button (the right-most upper button on the keyboard) until the computer screen goes blank (about 10 seconds or more). Be patient and do not be nervous, KEEP the button until the screen goes blank!

After the computer screen goes blank, you can turn on your MacBook once by pressing the power button.

Bad advice or what you should not do

On the network there are often people who, to put it mildly, give not very competent advice. Following these tips, you can simply harm yourself and your device. So, the most common bad advice and what I think about this I have highlighted below.

Wait until the battery is discharged and the MacBook itself turns off. Do not do this. To turn off the MacBook, use one of the methods described above. Some of them will definitely help you.

Disassemble the MacBook housing and disconnect / remove the battery. You don’t want to burn something inside the case or damage the battery? Then do not play "Superman with a screwdriver." Use one of the methods described above in this article.
