How to take a dog on a road trip in Europe

A dog is man’s closest friend among animals, often a full member of the family. Therefore, the owners go on vacation with their pets.

But you need to remember that a long trip can have a negative effect on a dog if you do not prepare for it properly. We will help you decide how to safely and without a hassle and unexpectedness go with your pet on vacation.

Pet health

First of all, you need to understand that for a pet, any trip even in a familiar car is stressful. Therefore, for travel, the dog must be in a normal physiological state in order to safely transfer it.

Traveling with pregnant or flowing bitches is also not recommended, as hormonal changes that occur in a special period in bitches make them very susceptible to negative factors.

Necessary vaccinations

When thinking about going on holiday with a dog, consider an important aspect - dogs are very curious animals and love to explore new places and get to know new animals. But everything new around can carry not only pleasant emotions, but also danger. Bacteria and other infections that your pet would not have been exposed to in the usual environment, can cause the disease if the natural immunity weakened after transportation (stress factor) is weakened.

It is most convenient and optimal to vaccinate with a complex vaccine that contains antibodies to the main infectious diseases that dogs are susceptible to.
Photo: Penn Vet Rabies vaccination, a deadly disease that is susceptible not only to animals but also to humans, is very important. Since dogs can often come into contact with carriers of this dangerous disease (rats, wild or stray animals), rabies vaccination is mandatory for them.

Local requirements

If you are planning a trip abroad with a pet, then you should know in advance the requirements of the host country in order to complete them all on time (sometimes it may take up to three months).

The rules of animal importation in many countries require that the dog be given certain vaccinations, blood tests for specific diseases are carried out. In some countries, the import of certain breeds of dogs is prohibited, and it happens that any dogs at all. So such data should not be neglected, otherwise it threatens that you and your pet will simply not be allowed into the country.

Hotel Policies

If you are used to taking your pet always with you, then when booking a hotel for a vacation, specify whether they have the opportunity to stay with a dog, and also do not forget to find out the conditions for placing the animals so that they suit you and your pet.
Photo: Y Nakanishi It will not be superfluous to find out in advance if they have their own place designated for dog walking or how close the park is located, where you could walk with the animal.

When planning a joint vacation with a dog, take care of chipping your pet. This is a mandatory requirement in many countries, and it will greatly simplify the search if the dog is accidentally lost.
Address tag with contact information for the dog collar. Photo: Jim Kelly If chipping is optional, then attach a tag with your contact details to the pet’s collar, because in an unfamiliar place far from home, the pet can easily get lost.

Veterinary documents

For traveling, the pet needs an international veterinary passport, in which all the necessary treatments and vaccinations are noted. These data must be certified by the seal of the veterinarian.

In addition to the veterinary passport, your pet may need a veterinary certificate, which indicates the current data on vaccinations, the results of mandatory studies, as well as confirmation of well-being for the infectious diseases of the area from which you are leaving.

Since the validity of the certificate is limited to five days, you should learn all the conditions and necessary manipulations for obtaining it from the veterinarian in advance, but draw up the document itself on the eve of the trip.

We are going on the road with a dog (what not to forget)

When collecting suitcases for a trip on vacation, do not forget about the pet's suitcase, because he also needs certain things.

  • Food and water - Calculate and take a sufficient amount of the usual food for your dog, as well as water if you doubt the availability of clean water at the resting place. It will also be useful to grab delicacies to pamper your pet or cheer him up.
  • Car drinker for dogs Tableware - Do not forget to bring bowls for food and water, it is advisable that the dog is already familiar with them (especially for picky pets). It is also convenient to use road (car) drinking bowls on the way, they, by the way, are perfect for long walks.
  • Veterinary passport - The same obligatory document for a dog as for a person his passport.
  • Veterinary certificate - Mandatory when traveling abroad, because for local veterinarians this is confirmation that your animal is healthy and safe in terms of infection. It will also be needed to allow a dog to board an airplane during an air flight.
  • Ammunition - a collar, leash or harness and a muzzle are required for a pet when traveling, because in certain places it can all come in handy or even be obligatory.
  • Dog Care Items - think over what you might need while traveling and at the place of rest, for example, wet wipes, towels, plastic bags, a cleaning spray for wool and paws, a hairbrush for a pet, clippers for claws and more. It is necessary to correctly assess the need for this or that thing, so as not to gain too much, but not to forget what is needed.
  • Favorite toy - Do not pack this thing far into the suitcase, you will need it to distract the pet’s attention if it gets nervous or bored, and it’s just useful for walking and playing. And the familiar toy will remind you of the house and help reduce the stress level from transportation.
  • First aid kit - On a trip with a dog, you will need to take first aid medications for your pet, because something unexpected can happen on the way. Dressing materials, antiseptic solutions and ointments, antispasmodics, medicines for indigestion and antiemetics, antipyretics, eye wash solution, antiallergic drugs will come in handy. More details in our article.
If your pet suffers from chronic diseases, then you will definitely need to take the appropriate necessary medications. It is best to consult with your veterinarian about specific drugs that you will need to seize for your dog.

Even if you are driving nearby and for a short time (for example, on a weekend at the cottage), then all of the above items (except for the certificate) will also be useful to you, just in this case you can store some in the country house and not carry it with you all the time.

What to take with you when traveling with a dog (video)

You may also need special transportation devices:

They can also be rigid plastic, solid or collapsible, on wheels.

Hard plastic carrying. These devices come in various sizes, so choosing the right one for your dog is usually not difficult. Since they are designed for transfer with a pet inside, they are therefore usually intended for small and medium breeds. For long trips, it is more comfortable to use hard carrying.

This device is more suitable for large dog breeds, because you still can’t carry a large pet.
Photo: marcokalmann Also available in various sizes. The presence of a cage will be a mandatory requirement when traveling with a large pet on the plane, as such animals are transported in the luggage compartment.

It is important to train the dog in advance to carry it or the cage so that the animal does not feel discomfort inside it, and besides the main purpose, it is quite possible to use this device as a cozy house for your pet at the resting place.

Why do I need some documents

Dogs are much more difficult to travel than people. Governments worry about the spread of disease in their country and control that no sick animals are brought into it.

Rosselkhoznadzor is responsible for the procedure for exporting animals from Russia. For import into Europe - the Commission of the European Union. The Rosselkhoznadzor website describes the procedure for exporting animals from Russia, where you can also download the current form of a veterinary certificate with explanations of how to fill it out. On the website of the European Commission - the rules for the import of animals into Europe, links to laws and requirements for registration of an international veterinary certificate.

When I understood what the states are being protected from, the whole process of collecting documents has become clearer. As a result, I spent 3,100 rubles on a passport, a microchip and vaccinations, did everything six months before the trip. 10 days before the trip I filled out all the necessary documents, and we left Russia without any problems.

I spent on a veterinary passport, a microchip and vaccinations

The result was the following sequence:

  1. We make out documents.
  2. We make vaccinations.
  3. We get help.
  4. We pass the border.

I’ll tell you about each step in more detail.

Veterinary passport

To let a dog pass on the border, you need a veterinary passport and a microchip.

It’s like a person’s passport, only for a dog. Without a passport they won’t be vaccinated, and customs officers will not be able to get vaccinated at the border. The breed, nickname, date of birth of the dog and information about the owner are recorded in the passport.

Another passport works like a card in a hospital. It marks all vaccinations and treatments. The passport identifies your dog and says that it is safe.

Veterinary passport Beads (Georgette by pedigree). The microchip number is pasted to the right and there is a mark with the number of the mark

When to do. Usually, the breeder makes the passport and issues it with the puppy upon purchase. If you need a new passport, lay down at least 30 days before the trip in order to have time to collect the remaining documents and put down vaccination marks in the passport.

Where to do. If there is no passport, you can buy a new one and fill it out yourself. Passports are sold on Ozone or in pet stores. It’s more convenient, but a little more expensive - to get a passport in a veterinary clinic when you will be vaccinated.

How much is. 50-500 rubles. Passport in pet stores or on "Ozone" - 50 rubles. In a veterinary clinic - 300-500 rubles with the filling. There are clinics where they give a passport for free if you get vaccinated with them.

At the border, customs officers must make sure that the dog is the one for which you pass it according to the documents.

Previously, a stigma was used for this: the puppy was tattooed with an individual number in the ear or groin. This number was entered in the passport. Now, instead of a tattoo, a microchip is implanted under the skin - once and for a lifetime. It is more humane and more convenient. A microchip in Europe is necessary, without it they won’t be allowed.

Information about all microchipped animals is stored in the two largest European databases - Pet-Max and Euro-Pet-Net. Companies from each country work with them. In Russia, information is transmitted to both databases by the organization "Animal Face".

When to do. The chip must be done earlier than the rabies vaccine: if you do the opposite, then the vaccine will have to be redone. Lay down at least 30 days before the trip in order to have time to make both a chip and documents.

Where to do. At a veterinary clinic that transmits data to a national database of chipped animals. You can view the list and select the clinic on

How much is. About a thousand rubles, if done in a veterinary clinic. More expensive if you call a specialist at home. For example, on the site “Animal Face” an inoculation within Mkada costs 2500 rubles.

A small-sized chip is injected into the dog at the withers with a syringe. There are few nerve endings - the animal does not hurt:

Rabies vaccine

In order for you to be released from Russia and allowed into Europe, you need to treat the dog from worms and vaccinate against rabies. Depending on which country you live in and which countries you will travel through, an additional rabies antibody test may be required.

A valid rabies vaccine is required for entry. When a doctor vaccinates, he notes the date of the last vaccination and the name of the medicine in the passport. The EU has a list of approved drugs. It is better to use one of them.

Where to do. In any public or private veterinary clinic that confirms vaccination with its seal in the dog’s passport.

When to do. There are several conditions:

  1. Be sure after chipping.
  2. After the dog turns 12 weeks old. Puppies are not vaccinated.
  3. After treatment from worms. Our veterinarian recommends waiting after treatment for 10-14 days so that the dog's immunity is not weakened.
  4. If this is the first vaccine, then no later than 21 days before entering Europe.
  5. If this is not the first vaccine, but the previous one was more than 12 months ago - also no later than 21 days before entering Europe.
  6. If this is not the first vaccine and you regularly get vaccinated every 12 months - any day before the trip.

How much is. About two thousand rubles, depending on the clinic.

Data on rabies vaccinations in the Businka passport. The doctor noted the name of the medicine, the date of the vaccine and certified it with a seal.

Rabies antibody titer test

If your dog lives or passes through a country with an unfavorable rabies situation, vaccination will not be enough. You need to take a test for the presence of rabies antibodies in the body. Such a test will be required if you go to Europe, for example, through Ukraine or Moldova.

Countries with unfavorable rabies in Annex 2 to the law on the EU website

In Russia and Belarus, the situation with rabies is good and such a test is not required.

Where to do. Only laboratories approved by the European Commission. There are 5 such laboratories in Russia.

When to do. The test additionally checks that the vaccine has worked and there are rabies antibodies in the dog’s body. There are several conditions again:

  1. After the last rabies vaccine, 30 days should pass. At this point, immunity should develop.
  2. Not earlier than 3 months before the trip.
  3. If you have already done the test, regularly receive rabies vaccinations on time and there are marks in the passport about this, you do not need to do the test again.

The test itself is done 14 days. If you order an urgent service - in 3 days.

How much is. Prices from the website of the accredited laboratory of FSBI “VGNKI”:

  • test in 14 days - 5000 R,
  • urgent test in 3 days - 10 000 R.

Worm Treatment

According to the rules of the Rosselkhoznadzor, all dogs are processed from worms to leave Russia, although only 5 countries in Europe are sure to watch a note about this when entering: Finland, Norway, Ireland, Great Britain and Malta.

These 5 countries require the worm medicine to contain praziquantel. In my veterinary clinic my dog is always given milbemax, in which 50% praziquantel.

Where to do. In any public or private veterinary clinic that puts its stamp on the vaccination passport.

When to do. Not earlier than 3 months before the trip. If you go to Finland, Norway, Ireland, Great Britain or Malta - not earlier than 5 days before the trip, but no later than one day.

How much is. Milbemax - about 300 rubles per pill. One tablet per 25 kg of weight.

Veterinary certificate No. 1

After all vaccinations are done, you need to get veterinary certificates. They confirm that the dog is healthy and can leave Russia.

To move through the territory of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan, a veterinary certificate No. 1 is issued. To travel abroad, it is exchanged for a veterinary certificate No. 5 and a Euro certificate, which replaces a passport while traveling in Europe.

With this document, the dog travels through the territory of the customs union: Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan.

Where to do. In state veterinary clinics. In different cities they are called differently. In Moscow, there are stations for combating animal diseases, in St. Petersburg - veterinary stations, and in the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug - veterinary centers. Clinic contacts are easily found on the Internet at the request of “state veterinary clinics”.

When to do. The certificate is valid for 5 days. During this time, it must be exchanged for certificate No. 5 and the EU certificate.

How much is. Is free.

What you need to receive. Dog for examination, veterinary passport, a mark on the current vaccine against rabies.

Upon examination, the doctor will give the dog anthelmintic tablets and make a note about it in the passport. If you yourself have given the remedy, you can not repeat the anthelmintic, but pass the dog's feces for analysis.

Veterinary certificate No. 5

Certificate No. 5 allows the dog to leave the territory of Russia and cross the border. Those traveling with a dog on an airplane receive this certificate immediately at the airport in exchange for certificate No. 1. For traveling by car, you need to get the document in advance and take it with you.

Where to do.

How much is. Is free.

What you need to receive. Dog for examination, a veterinary passport with a chip number, marks on the current rabies vaccine and treatment for worms, certificate No. 1.

Since we were traveling through Belarus, I received the certificate in advance at the veterinary station at Kievsky station. There was no queue. Drawn up in 30 minutes. The doctor checked the chip, marked vaccinations and filled in the main points of the trip route

Veterinary certificate for the European Union

Together with certificate No. 5, they issue a second certificate for entry and movement within the European Union. This document accompanies the dog all the time while she is in Europe.

The certificate is filled out in English or in the language of the country through which they enter Europe.

Where to do. At the same border veterinary points, where certificate number 5.

there is a veterinary certificate for the EU

When to do. The document is valid 10 days from the date of issue. In fact, you will have 5 days from the date of issue to enter Europe, since certificate No. 5 for leaving Russia is only valid for 5 days.

After entry, the certificate is valid for 4 months. So much time you can travel with him.

How much is. Is free.

What you need to receive. The same documents that you collect for certificate No. 5.

We pass the border: customs declaration

In addition to veterinary certificates at the border, they will be asked to fill out a customs declaration so that you confirm that you are not transporting the dog for sale.

Upon departure, the customs officers will put marks and stamps on the declaration, enter the information about the dog into the database, and a copy of the declaration will be returned to you. She needs to be kept the whole trip and imagine when you return.

The declaration shows that you went with the dog, which means that you must also return with the dog.

In order not to waste time at the border, the declaration can be downloaded from the website of the Federal Customs Service of the Russian Federation and filled in advance.

At the border checkpoint, you need to line up in the red corridor and say that a dog is traveling with you to call a veterinarian.

You can cross the border with the dog only in those places where there is a veterinarian. We drove into Poland through the border checkpoint Brest - Terespol. A full list of items is on the website of the Eurasian Economic Commission.

All documents received, vaccinations collected and the border passed. You can relax and rest.

The trip went great. Collecting documents was not a problem, since I started to do them in advance. He made a passport and microchip in January, and after 2 weeks he planted a Bead against rabies. And then 2 weeks before the trip in June I received veterinary certificates.

I spent 3100 rubles on everything:

  • microchip - 1500 R,
  • registration of a new passport - 500 R,
  • vaccination against rabies - 1100 R.

We do regular treatment for worms, and I do not include this in travel expenses.

Preparing the dog for a car trip

The main preparation of the dog for traveling by car, especially for a long journey, is to train the pet for the car. The dog should not be afraid of the car, it should get used to it, and it should not be rocked.

You need to teach your dog a car as early as possible, preferably from puppyhood. A dog, like people in a car, can get sick, right down to nausea.

Decide where the dog will usually ride: at your feet, in the back seat, or in the trunk of a car (unless, of course, you have a car - a station wagon or a large SUV with a large space after the rear seats). For short distances, the dog can drive while sitting at its feet, but for long trips for the dog (especially the large one), you need to allocate a place where the dog can sit and lie quietly, changing the position if necessary.

To prevent your pet from staining the seats with your paws, throw a cover or blanket over them. When transporting in the trunk, it is better to use a soft mat on which your pet can safely lie down.

We train a puppy, like an adult dog, gradually, starting with the opportunity to get acquainted with the machine, sniff it, climb inside and sit inside. Invite the pet to get into the car and give it a treat inside. After this, it is necessary to drive the dog a short distance, for example, around the block, gradually increasing the duration of the trips.

In no case should you blame the dog if it vomits in the passenger compartment.

After the dog is a little comfortable in the car, it is necessary to conduct a small tourist trip, each time increasing the distance traveled. Do not feed the dog before the ride, especially if your dog is not yet used to the car enough. It is better to skip one feeding, and feed the pet later.

Better, and faster, the dog gets used to the car when he realizes that after a trip in the car there will always be “fun”. A trip to nature or to the country, with subsequent active dog games and walks, the dog will be perceived positively. And after some time, your dog will ask to get into the car, so that he would go "free".

How we taught our dog to the car

Taken at the age of four months, the husky puppy in the car was constantly vomiting. In our first outings with him, the dog literally rode on my lap, pressing his head to my neck. If the dog was not on his knees, he was necessarily sick.

But we, as responsible and patient owners, and active tourists, went out of the city every week, where the dog was given the opportunity to actively and walk a lot.

The first time after the walk, I had to arrange "dancing with tambourines" in order to put the dog back in the car. The dog ran around us, in five - six meters, completely ignored the commands, and the proposed "sweets", and toys, and categorically did not want to get into the car. Judging by the impudent cunning face, he openly scoffed at us - "try, catch up!" Had to move away from the car, there to attach the dog to the leash, and lead to the car on a leash.

After two - three months of patient accustoming to the car, the situation has changed dramatically. During daily morning walks, the dog began to pull toward the car, poking at it with a nose, and offering to go for a walk, and at the sight of a backpack and car keys taken in hand, the dog began to ride with joy.

Currently, the open door of the car is perceived by the dog as an opportunity to get in there, and go - go - go ...

We also began to notice that the older our dog gets, the more time he prefers to spend in the car. In fact, he is ready to travel around the city with us for hours, if only he is next to us. Such a dog devotion.

We collect dog things on the road

A dog, like a child, needs its own hiking gear.

I will not speak in detail about the vaccinations necessary for the dog, suggesting that any dog should be vaccinated, especially from rabies (forest residents can be carriers of a whole bunch of canine diseases, and your pet can become infected from any, even the smallest, caught mouse). Of no small importance is the vaccine "against ticks." Our dog was ill with pyroplasmosis, therefore, unfortunately, we experienced the vital need of a tick-borne vaccination or treatment against ticks of our dog.

Dog Carriage

This trip option is most convenient for the pet, suitable for dogs of all sizes.

Even large breeds will feel comfortable in the car, the main thing is to provide the pet with enough space (so that there is free space for changing the position of the body).

How to train a dog to drive a car

If you are planning a joint trip with a dog in a car, then you should early and gradually accustom the dog to the car (it is better to start with puppyhood):

  1. First of all, let your pet get acquainted with a quietly standing machine with the engine turned off, sniff it properly.
  2. Then open the door and let the dog enter the parlor herself. You should not force or drag a pet to go inside, so you only scare him.
  3. If the dog is not interested in the salon, you can call him from the inside, put the toy and / or treat inside. Let the animal stay in the car, but do not force or lock it. Let the pet go whenever it wants.
  4. After a while, when the dog gets used to the car, you can try to start the engine. This is best done when there is a family member in the back seat next to the pet who will calm him down. Do not close the doors so that the dog sees that it is not locked and there are escape routes.
  5. When the dog begins to calmly tolerate the noise of the engine, including turning it on and off, close the doors of the car. It is better if at this time a family member who is next to the dog distracts her attention. If the pet is nervous, then first you should calm him down, and only then release him. Photo: Kevin Schraer
  6. When the pet already tolerates being inside the locked car with the engine running, start moving. At first, make short trips, for 5-10 minutes. Keep in mind that a dog can vomit, so before you ride your pet it is better not to feed and cover the back seat with a blanket.
  7. Gradually increase the duration of the trips, however, monitor the behavior of the pet to avoid surprises (during a long trip, the dog may need it outside of its schedule because of excitement).

Even if you don’t have a personal car, you should still teach your pet to the car, its noise and smell, because a situation may arise when you need to use a car (friend or taxi) to take a dog somewhere, for example, to vaccination to the veterinarian.

How to transport a dog in a car

Dogs are usually transported in the back seat of a car. To protect it from all kinds of pollution and damage that the dog can inflict, you can cover the back of the car with a litter, preferably from a durable moisture-resistant material, but comfortable enough for the dog.

A more convenient means of protecting seats are special covers for them. They sit tight on the seat and the dog does not crumple them, as is the case with bedding. At the end of the trip, covers are easy to remove and clean from contamination.

You can also use auto hammock - A special device for transporting a dog in a car. The hammock spreads on the back seat and is attached to the front and rear head restraints - and a convenient transportation place for the dog is ready. And most importantly, such a hammock reliably protects the interior of the car, since its protective layer covers not only the seat, but also the back.

Dog hammock

You can also optionally use a harness for transportation. It is attached to the seat belt and prevents the pet from moving outside the rear seat, but moving around the seat itself does not limit. Also, this device will provide the pet with additional safety in the event of an accident.

If your car’s luggage compartment is not isolated from the passenger compartment, then in the spacious trunk you can equip a convenient place to transport the dog. However, remember that in an isolated trunk you can’t transport a pet in any way - you won’t be able to control the condition of the animal in any way, it may lack fresh air, and dogs usually can’t tolerate being in a confined space.

Photo: Jim Gray

Also, do not leave the dog alone for more than a few minutes, especially in the heat or frost. Overheating and hypothermia can cause irreparable harm to health and even lead to the death of the animal.

Dog on the bus

Traveling by bus with a dog is less comfortable than in a car - the reason for this is stopping strictly according to the schedule, a lot of strangers and rather cramped conditions. In addition, the pet may get sick or it will have natural needs to take a walk when it is impossible to do so.

Photo: Adrian Miller

In addition, the animal will not be allowed to move around the cabin and interfere with other passengers (barking and whining, among other things), this can cause dissatisfaction of passengers and even the carrier’s refusal to further transport you and your pet.

Small dog breeds are easier to ride on the bus, as they can usually be carried on hand in a soft carry or even without it. It is more difficult with large pets - they must have a short leash and a muzzle on them, and they are usually transported on the rear platform of the bus in order to bother the rest of the passengers as little as possible.

Photo: Laura Goodrich

The rules for transporting dogs on a bus are not well defined and can be interpreted in various ways. It is most reliable in advance, before buying tickets, to check with the carrier whether it is possible to travel with a dog in his bus. It is important to indicate the breed and size of your dog and specify the conditions for its transportation on the bus.

If you have chosen this type of transport for a trip with a dog, then be prepared for the unexpected and take the necessary things with you to the salon (water, napkins, bags, etc.).

It is worth noting that in the city and suburban transport it is allowed to transport dogs - small breeds in carrying on hands, medium and large - in the muzzle and on a short leash. If the dog behaves calmly, then, as a rule, he will not deliver inconvenience to others.

Rules for transporting a dog on a train

The rules for transporting animals on a train allow dogs to be transported inside the train, however, the specific transportation conditions depend on the size of the dog and the class of carriage. This can be, for example, transportation of a pet in an unused vestibule of a car in the presence of the owner, or in a separate compartment, provided that the remaining seats are redeemed (so that there are no unauthorized passengers in the compartment).

In suburban trains (trains), dogs are allowed to be transported inside the carriage, provided that the pets are safe and do not cause passengers any inconvenience (carrying, leash, collar).

Is it possible to transport a dog in the cabin

Different airlines may have different animal transportation requirements. But, as a rule, small dog breeds are allowed in the aircraft cabin. At the same time, the pet should be in a container (cage, rigid carrying, etc.), and its total weight with the pet inside should not exceed 8-10 kg. The container will have to be under the front seat during the flight.

It is worth noting that many carriers allow dogs to be transported in the cabin only in economy class, and also place passengers with pets near emergency exits, kitchens or toilets.

Photo: Anouk-Gr

All flight conditions for your pet should be found in advance from the carrier of the airline whose services you plan to use. If all the conditions suit you, you will need to reserve a place for your pet, as airlines have a limit on the number of animals transported per flight.

Big dog on the plane

Dogs of medium and large breeds (and sometimes, due to weight, small dogs fall into this category) can only be transported in an airplane in the luggage compartment in a special cage, which the owner must acquire. The bottom of the cage must be covered with waterproof material.

Photo: Dillon K.

Be sure to specify in advance the possibility of transporting a large dog from a representative of your airline, as well as the maximum weight of the pet that they are allowed to board (usually it is up to 50 kg with the cage).

Please note that the dog will be isolated in the luggage compartment, you won’t be able to go to it (for example, to check its condition or give a drink if necessary), and the crew is not responsible for caring for animals, so long flights with large dogs are not recommended.

Useful Tips

Of course, the preparation for the trip, and the trip itself, will also depend on the characteristics of your pet. Here are some general tips to help you and your dog along the way.

  • During the trip, pay attention to the condition of your pet and its behavior, so as not to miss the moment when he becomes unwell or just wants to need.
  • If your dog does not tolerate travel, contact your veterinarian in advance for advice on the possible use of sedatives. Please note that during air travel zealous with the use of sedatives is not recommended - because of their side effects, it will be more difficult for the dog to transfer the flight conditions.
  • If your pet is motion sick, you can use veterinary drugs against motion sickness (for example, rasfit, serenia). The drug must be given in advance of the trip, strictly following the instructions for it.
  • However, if you often travel with a pet, then the constant use of such drugs is undesirable, so gradually gradually train your dog to travel. As a rule, motion sickness ceases over time.
If the trip is long, then the dog on the way to feed less often and in small portions, it is advisable to use dry food of good quality, but the food should be familiar to the pet.
  • Before the trip, walk the dog well, maybe she will do all her necessary work, which will simplify your journey.
  • When choosing public transport as a means of travel, keep in mind that, even if your pet tolerates the trip perfectly and does not bother passengers with barking and obsession, there is always the possibility that you will be close to a passenger who is allergic to animals.
  • Arriving at the place of rest, give the pet time to get acquainted with the new place, sniff and remember the environment. So the dog will quickly get used to a new place and more easily find a way to you if you suddenly get lost.
  • Do not forget that you are fully responsible for your pet and the consequences of what it can do, therefore, while on vacation in a foreign country, monitor the behavior of your dog and compliance with the rules of decency, including clean up excrement during your walk.

If you don’t have a soul in your pet, but you have to travel often or just plan a long trip on vacation, you should not be sad because of the need to make a choice between a dog and a trip, because they can be combined

Your pet will become a faithful companion on the road and on vacation, the main thing is to properly prepare it for the trip and take everything you need with you. Do not deny the pleasure of seeing the world to yourself or your pet, because dogs also love to travel.

And so, we collect dog things on the road:

  1. Bowl for food and water.
  2. A supply of drinking water and food, or a set of products if you feed the dog "naturalka". As a rule, in hiking conditions, a dog eating natural food eats the same thing as the owners (cereals, soups). The set of products is increasing by one more person.
  3. Litter for sleep.
  4. Large rags or towels, in case a wet or dirty dog needs to be wiped dry before getting into the car. For these purposes, I use old duvet covers (they absorb moisture well). And such rags are simply necessary if your dog is wet, and it’s cool outside - you need to wipe the dog dry, so that the dog would not catch a cold.
  5. Leash and muzzle (if necessary).
  6. Dog comb. This is especially true for long-haired and actively shedding dogs. After outdoor games or active games in a pond, the dog’s hair begins to climb with particular intensity, and it is better to comb it, in order to avoid getting into the car interior.
  7. If the dog ride on the seat - a cover (or cover) for the seat.
  8. Dog sprays from ticks will not be superfluous, especially during the tick-borne season. And do not forget tweezers or a special tool to remove ticks from the dog.
  9. Be sure to travel with a dog in a car you need to take dog "goodies" and a couple of toys.
  10. Pharmacy set (peroxide, bandage, cotton wool). Any tourist always carries a first-aid kit with him. It has everything you need in case your pet, for example, injures his paw.

Place the dog while riding in a car

In order for the dog to easily endure a long trip, the dog needs to prepare a convenient place. Sometimes the road to the resting place can take more than one day, for example, the road to the South can take up to three days, and to Lake Baikal - four days one way (with normal movement and good night's rest). And, the larger your pet, the more space it needs in the car.

There should be enough space so that the dog can lie quietly, stretch out its legs if necessary and change its position. Some dogs, as in our case, ride in the back seat of a car. The three of us travel in the car (I, the spouse and the dog), so the back seat is free.

It is possible to allocate space for the dog in the trunk of a station wagon, but you need to fix things that are in the trunk so that during movement they do not fall on the dog and crush or injure it. To do this, you can use a dense mesh, stretched between the walls of the car.

Some tourists use special spacious cages for transportation of animals in the car - transportation.

Sometimes dog owners recommend locking the dog with a leash during movement, especially if the dog is too active in the car and there is a risk of the driver jumping into his arms or legs. In no case should you do this! When fixing, or rather, tying a dog in a car with a leash, with a sharp movement of the car, for example, with sharp braking or avoiding an obstacle, there is a possibility of strangulation or injury to a pet that simply hangs on its own collar.

If the dog behaves uneasily in the car, tries to move around the cabin, it is better to transport it in a bag or container - transportation. Believe me, it will be calmer and safer for both you and your pet.

The dog, accustomed to the car, behaves absolutely calmly in it. And many dogs, as soon as the movement began, like experienced tourists, fall apart in their place and calmly doze off, occasionally showing curiosity about where they are now.

Do not forget, the dog is more tolerant of a long car trip in the event that it constantly sees its owners. Just like a little kid.

Stops on the way

As well as people, when traveling by car, the dog needs periodic stops in order to run and stretch his legs and do the necessary “dog things”. It is necessary to stop every 2 - 3 hours of movement, for 15 - 20 minutes. At this time, your pet should run (or at least walk). It is best to play with a dog (let him run after a ball or stick).

During the stop, the dog must be drunk.

Also, when driving in a car, especially if it is hot outside and the car does not have air conditioning, you need to drink a dog. A working air conditioner also dries the air, so the dog should still be given water.

In order not to stop while driving, we adapted as follows: a small bowl and a bottle of ordinary drinking water are always prepared at hand. Pour some water into a bowl (hold the bowl in your hand so that the water does not spill). The dog is drinking. If necessary, add water. Excess water from the bowl can be safely thrown out the window.

In no case should you leave the dog in the car with the windows closed tightly. Especially in the heat. Too high air temperature in a car heated in the sun and the lack of fresh air can kill your pet.

Dog - traveler or dog on vacation

But if your pet is young or overly impulsive, you need to walk with him around the neighborhood (on a leash) and allow him to sniff everything calmly. If the dog is nervous, it is necessary to calm her down (pet, hold in her arms, give a treat, or distract her with her favorite toy).

Upon reaching the resting place, praise your pet, because it has withstood such a long road!

Arriving at the place of rest, do not forget to take care of where your dog will sleep. Perhaps with you in a tent or in a car. The place should be dry and comfortable.

To our dog we stele in the front seat of the car. This is a child. Small child.

During the period of tick activity, try to inspect your pet more often. Not only do ticks bite dogs with pleasure, they can still crawl onto the hosts. It makes no sense to collect ticks taken from the dog for analysis. But you can’t throw them away either - they will immediately find a new victim.

Take along a small roll of adhesive tape or electrical tape. Seal the tick removed from the dog with tape and it will certainly not go anywhere, and will not be able to bite and multiply further.
