Updating JunOS Using a USB Drive

How to update firmware in the Juniper SRX-2 part via a USB flash drive

Earlier, I described a method How to update firmware (firmware) in Juniper SRX via a web interface, now we will consider the second method no less difficult how to update firmware (firmware) in Juniper SRX via a USB flash drive.

For this method, you will need a USB flash drive formatted in FAT16 or FAT32, if you suddenly do not know how to do this, read how to format a USB flash drive in FAT16, FAT32, NTFS / How to format a USB flash drive in Windows 7 / Windows Server 2008R2.

Suppose you format a USB flash drive and upload the desired firmware to it. You can do this on the official website.

Insert the flash drive into your SRX. We connect to the device through the console or SSH under the account root

First, let's see the current version. This is done by the team

show version

and we see that I have version 11.4R11

Let's see which devices are already created.

Now plug our USB flash drive into any free port and look at the list of devices again:

Comparing the output of the two teams, we find that the flash drive is defined as / dev / da1, and the only section on it is like / dev / da1s1.

Updating JunOS Using a USB Drive: 2 Comments

Good afternoon.
It does not happen as you have in the instructions for “Updating JunOS using a USB drive” The indicators do not start blinking orange. A flash drive in FAT with a standard cluster size is formatted, an autoinstall.conf file is created.
Is it possible to indicate after which message in the console it is necessary to press the reset config button and how long should it be kept pressed?
Juniper SRX-100

Hello, Alexey.
In my case, the indicators blinked at about the moment when the device issued an invitation to enter a username and password. The reset config button was pressed for about 3-5 seconds. Try to check if the SRX sees the USB flash drive itself, maybe this is the case, if at all you try to use the second method, there is a link to it at the end of this article.

Connect the USB flash drive to the computer and run the Flash Drive Information Extractor program (extract the program folder from the archive and run the GetFlashInfo.exe file).

Press the button at the top of the program “Get flash drive data”.

The program will give us the result. We look at the information that is opposite the VID and PID.

You can copy these numbers, or leave the utility window open, the data obtained will be useful to us now.

We are looking for a utility for flash drive firmware

According to the VID and PID, we need to find a utility with which we will flash the controller. There is a good site, which contains a database of flash drives and utilities for their recovery.

We follow the link and in the fields “V> (or in another, similar program).

Push button Search and see the result.

In the search results we are looking for a flash drive similar to ours. The list may include devices from other manufacturers. It’s just that they have the same controller, it was determined by V> (just where the name of the utility is not indicated on 16 GB). You try to choose a more similar device from the list.

We are interested in the field Utils (utility), copy its name, completely.

We follow the link and in the search bar we paste the name of the utility that we copied. Are looking for.

Unfortunately, the utility that I need is not found on this site. Perhaps you are more lucky and you will see something in the search results. Download the utility to your computer.

But I did not stop there and began to google. Just asked “SK6221 MPTool 2013-04-25” and found this utility on some other site. If you have the same flash drive, then this utility - download. True, the name of the archive is different, but it didn’t stop me from successfully curing my flash drive.

USB drive recovery process

Unplug the flash drive. Extract the utility folder from the archive and run .exe file. In my case, this is the MPTool.exe file. Also look at the text file readme.txt. Perhaps there is an instruction, or a link to a site with instructions. If the instruction is in English, then translate it using the same

I’ll tell you how I did it (you just might have another utility and everything could be different there, but it should not be very different).

The utility is running. We connect the flash drive. In two lines in the program I got information about a flash drive. Push button Start. In my case, a yellow bar signaled the firmware process. We wait.

When the process was over, I saw a green color, the campaign is all right.

A Windows message prompting you to format the disk should appear immediately. But the first time most likely nothing will work out. Unplug the flash drive and plug it back in. The driver must be installed and the removable drive appears in Explorer. You can format it.

I checked the write speed, everything is as it should for USB 3.0, everything is fine!

You must be prepared for the fact that actions may differ from those that I described. And not everything can work out the first time. The main thing is not to give up and everything will turn out!
